Mario JR Churchill asked:

Since education has become very expensive, students are turning to student credit cards. When allowances from home are not enough to cover for the expenses in college, student credit cards can help augment a student’s budget.

A student credit card is especially designed for students. This is a secured credit card which provides control over the expenses and prevents debt accumulation. The student credit card may cover for anything that the student needs. Many resort to this since student loans in schools usually do not cover expenses not related to school such as groceries, laundry expenses, transportation and many others.

The way a student credit card works is the same as any credit card in the market although the student card has some restrictions in comparison with the non-student credit cards. Application may either be through direct application to the credit company or through online services. Either way, the applicant must be at least 18 years old, should have a valid Social Security number and must be a college or graduate student.

In online applications, the student must furnish the following information: name in full, date of birth, citizenship and permanent residence address. Needed also are home address, email address and telephone number and a relative’s home address and contact details. Details of the college and enrollment details are also needed. The applicant must also state the address to which the card will be dispatched, billing address and the information about the bank account.

Best student credit cards are those that give high credit lines with very low interest rates. Initial credit line application would give a credit ranging from $500 to $1,000 and interest rates ranging from 10% to 19.8%. This interest range is based from the rates of good credit payers and those who have mishandled their credit.

When applying for student credit card online, choose credit companies that offer zero percent introductory APR, has no annual fee, has an interest free grace period and zero percent liability in case somebody uses the student credit card without the owner’s knowledge. Go also for those that give extra features such as cash back bonus, rewards program and competitive interest rates.

Before completing the application form online, be sure to look for the best credit companies offering better credit packages than the others. A few referrals may also help you choose the kind of credit line to apply for. Asking a friend or a classmate who has had experiences with online student credit cards can be the best way to get the opinion and help make decisions or choices.

In the internet, there are quite many companies offering different packages to entice more and more number of students resorting to student credit cards since applications online have been made easy. With just a few clicks and information, the student credit card may be granted within seconds. Just be sure to furnish the different information completely.

Be sure to read properly the terms and conditions of the student credit card before submitting your application. Counter-check the information that you have entered in the application form. Do not go into agreements if there are unclear terms. Inquire in the credit company immediately. Be sure also to have a clear payment term so as not to acquire huge debts that will be harder to pay if not properly handled.

Julio

John F Smith asked:

Today in the 21st century, the credit card is the no. 1 medium used for all financial transactions ranging from the food bills, to gas, and even furniture. Also, it is a well known fact that credit cards are granted to businessmen and professionals because a cards paying capacity is well established.

Nowadays, the credit cards importance is recognized by most people and most people would like to get one. Even high school and college students are given credit cards.

You can get a credit card account easily by using a cosigner. When you apply for this, you need someone to back you up, which means through your cosigner, you have a better chance of getting you application approved.

When you get a student credit card using a cosigner, all the privileges enjoyed by the usual card holder will be granted to you also. You can enjoy a high credit limit to match all your needs for your academic and extra curricular activities.

You will also have a convenient payment scheme with low interest rates. This will provide you ease and convenience not just when using the card but also in paying.

With this student credit card, you will be able to manage your debt properly; thus, you will maintain good credibility. This is a must have in every pocket of college students for it will give you superior spending power while teaching you to become responsible financially wise.

Application is always available online so if you are interested, browse the internet to complete and submit your application form.

Donna

Morgan Hamilton asked:

Most kids can’t wait to get that first credit card. While it can be an exciting moment in a young adult’s life, it is not something that should be rushed into without doing some homework first (after all you are students). Research the criteria and terms of the card, set some limits for yourself and, if applicable, admit that you’re not ready for the responsibility. The purpose of this article is to discus the questions you should ask yourself before filling out a student credit card application.

Am I Old Enough? This one may seem like common sense but every year credit card companies send pre-approved applications to seventeen years olds enrolled in college. If you are not 18 than it is not legal for you to have a credit card, even if the company sends you a application.

Are The Terms Reasonable? The main terms you want to look at are the annual percentage rate (APR), the late and overdraft fees, the grace period offered by the company, and whether or not there is an annual fee attached to the card. The APR on student credit cards usually aren’t very low so just shop around the lowest you can apply for. Late and overdraft fees (which you shouldn’t have to pay if you stay responsible) are usually pretty much the same. Avoid cards with no grace period since you’ll end up paying too much in interest and never get a card with an annual fee.

When Will I Use This Card? Idealistically you should only use your card for emergencies. Get a debit card or pay cash for everyday purchases and impulse buys (if you can afford it). If you state that you will only use the card for emergences, go one step further and define what an emergency is. If you consider a pizza craving on Friday night an emergency, stay away from credit cards for a while. Remember to do this before filling out the student credit card application, not after you have the card in hand when the temptation may be too great to resist.

Can I Really Handle This? In other words, have you been responsible in the past? Have you usually been good with money, saving until you really needed or wanted something? Or does money seem to burn a hole in your pocket until you just have to spend it on something, anything at all?

Samuel

Tom Tessin asked:

If you’ve never looked a credit application before, it’s best that you know exactly what’s on that application and how you can apply properly. Whether it’s your first credit card or you’ve just simply forgotten the procedure, this article will guide you through the application process on what you can expect when you fill out your application online.

Before you apply for your first credit card as a student, you must meet the following guidelines, if you don’t meet these guidelines, you may have to apply for another credit card or if you’re under the age of 18, you will have to wait.

-	You must be at least 18 years of age. There is no exception to this rule. Credit cards are intended for adults. If you’re not an adult, you can’t apply, it’s the law.

-	You must be a valid US citizen with a valid social security number. Credit card companies will check your identity. If something seems fishy, they won’t distribute the card to you. Make sure that you have a valid social security number and that you’re a valid United States citizen.

-	You must be in college. The purpose of a student credit card is that it’s designed for college students. If you’re not a student, then you’re not going to get approved. As long as you’re going to college, you’re going to get accepted most likely unless your credit is bad.

If you meet the above requirements, you’re probably ready to start applying for your credit card. Most applications are very similar and ask the same exact question. Overall, there are not that many credit card companies. In fact, there are only four major companies. Below, you can find what to expect on your credit card application.

-	Your full name, date of birth, your current residency, and as mentioned above, you will need to supply your social security number.

-	Your telephone number along with a valid e-mail address and your current and previous address. If you don’t have a previous address, you can simply leave this blank.

-	The college you’re attending, what class you currently fall under (freshman, etc), and the location of the college as well.

-	Your job details, how much you make, where the job is located, the company name.

The only difference you’ll see with a student credit card is that they will ask for school information. If you find yourself applying for another type of credit card that isn’t college student related, you will find that they won’t ask for this information. When filling out your credit card application, make sure that you’re completely honest. If the company finds that you’re lying or trying to manipulate their system you may find them sending you a rejection letter and/or they might contact the local authorities, if you find yourself having to lie to get a credit card, simply don’t do it. When you finally receive your credit card, remember to be responsible and safe.

Travis

VLG asked:

Around 7 months ago I got into quite a financial mess. In the end I ended up missing my credit card minimum payments about 3 times or so. Since 4 or so months ago I caught myself up, paid what I owed from the missed payments all at once, and havn’t paid any payments late since then. Actually pay them earlier than the due date.

I also had a incorrect report on my credit profile. Best Buy’s credit card company had kept reporting me as not paying my balance for 60, 90, 120 days, when in fact I paid that credit card in FULL almost a year ago. Finally they reported me as a collection charge-off, and that’s when I called them and they got that removed, and changed it to account settled in full.

I’m thinking of applying for a small student credit card, from CIBC. Since I am a full-time student, and having a small credit card can come in handy sometimes. (I don’t have the credit cards I mentioned above anymore, I just pay them down, they’re not in use).

What are my chances of getting approved for the $500 Student Card? I don’t want to apply & then get declined again.

Thing is, I got laid-off from my summer job, and now i’m unemployed until I start school next month, when I start my part-time job at the hospital there. So right now I have nothing to put in the employment information section of my credit application.

Lillian
