Julian Hooks asked:

Prior to trying to raise your credit score you You should get a hold of the basics. You definitely need to understand exactly what it actually is, how it’s derived, and why it is so essential to you and your future.

Creditors and lenders understand the type of info they can get from your credit report you yourself should also know to better prepare yourself for future financial decisions that you may come across. Here are a few easy tips to follow to help you understand the basics of your credit score.

Understanding where your credit score comes from!

if you plan on raising your credit then it is obvious that you have to understand what your score consists of. Without that knowledge you knock in and be very good at improving your score because you don’t understand things you do to affect your score in the first place.

For starters your credit score is just a number that determines how much of a risk lending you money would be. Your score is usually between 300 and 850. The higher your score the less of the risk you are considered. Also the higher your rating the better chance you’ll be given a lower interest rate. Scores in the 600s sometimes have trouble getting approved for credit cards and loans. While those in the 700s and of course 800s received the best interest rates available.

Although these numbers seem pretty concrete keep in mind that there are always open for interpretation. Some lenders are willing to work with those with lower credit scores while others have a cut off. Also some lenders will only view your score while others view you are score and report.

Your credit score of course goes hand in hand with your credit report, which is basically your financial history. Your score is derived from the information in your report. Remember that there are three major credit bureaus and they all have different formulas and possibly different information regarding your credit history in their databases. That is why it is recommended to review all three of your credit reports and scores.

If you do not have a current copy of your credit report then you should be ashamed. You can receive free credit reports online with the click of a mouse so there is no excuse. There is no better way to learn about credit then to view your own report. It is full of vital information and explains the good bad and the ugly of your previous financial situations.

Constance

Tom Tessin asked:

If you’ve been to college before, you’ve seen the millions of ways college kids have been drawn in for a credit card application. The sad thing is though that a lot of these kids don’t necessarily realize what they are getting themselves into. We are going to break down some ways on how credit card companies lure in students so that you can avoid this situations.

Getting the freebies

Everyone has seen these stands regardless of where you’ve been. From free t-shirts to a free burrito, people love free stuff. What a better way to get a free t-shirt by applying for a credit card application. A lot of students just fill out the paperwork thinking its innocent work for that $5 burrito. What they don’t realize is that they are affecting their credit score and possibly their credit history.

The problem with getting a credit card when you sign up for freebies is that you don’t know exactly what the terms and APR rates are. Sometimes what students may realize is that the credit card may have an annual fee. An annual fee is applied to your statement regardless if you use it or not.

Hard selling

Besides the freebies, students may sometimes notice a kiosk set up at their school from a credit card operation. A lot of these salespeople are highly trained in their area and lure you into signing up for an application. Some of the tactics they use are making it sound like a wonderful financial opportunity or how it can build up your credit. Once again, this is bad because you don’t know the official terms and exactly how the card acts.

Sponsorships

Students may find that when they attend an event at school, it will be sponsored by a major company. A lot of the times, these events are sponsored by a company. During these spiels, they will generally promote the credit card throughout the event. This way of selling a credit card is technically less pressurized because of the lack of the one on one basis.

A lot of the times you will just receive a flyer or brochure at the end of the event. The best way is to simply throw the credit card brochure out or just use it as scrap paper during class.

When looking for your first card or a credit card to be added to your collection, it’s important that you do your research. The freebies like a free t-shirt or burrito just isn’t worth it when it comes down to your credit. When you do apply, make sure you pay attention to the APR rate, if it has an annual fee, and what kind of rewards it has to offer.

When you do receive you first card, it’s up to you to be responsible with it. Treat it as if it were cash and don’t overspend. If you can follow these golden rules, you will be debt-free for your lifetime.

Willie

thelastpolymath asked:

I am now in a very bad stage of my life. Any help will be most appreciated.

I am 20-years-old. My family and I are (legal) immigrants. I am about to start work within the next two weeks. I want to move out and work, live and pay for my college, on my own. (I just withdrew from a Tier 1 university where I was a physics major; I have goals in life; I am not one of those bad immigrants)

Here’s the problem:

I don’t have a credit card/credit history. And the apartment office told me something about requiring the credit application. How can I do this?

1) How fast can I get a credit card after I get work?

The rent is only $389, which I can manage.

2) But how do I get the credit history?

Please assume I can get little help from my parents. I am on my own. Please help me out. I am not completely familiar with the housing business.
Thank you both for your answers and support.

Emma

By the way. Capital One sent me this credit card offer through the mail with a reservation number, so I was instantly approved. But, I have applied for a Amazon Credit Card, a CitiBank, a PayPal Plus, and each one keeps telling me they can not process my application right now, and they will send me their decision in a few days to 30 days. What does that mean? Could it be that they don’t have any information on me, as far as my credit history is concerned, because I just got a Capital One credit card. I hope this means that, and not that I’m not approved. Please, tell me what this usually means.

Derek C asked:

I want to get a credit card.

I’m 18, a college student and have no credit history as far as I know. I have applied for several cards but was denied because I have no credit history. Also I recently began co-renting an apartment with a friend though and the credit application was approved probably because of his credit. Does this do something to my credit history that would somehow give me a credit history or score or something, and if so, is there some kind of timeframe when stuff starts to get reported to the credit reporting agencies? Thanks for the help.

Zachary

The card I want to apply for is the Visa College Platinum Card that has no cosigner or minimum income. Do you think the no minimum income claim is true or is it just something they say to get me to apply? Also, if my application were to be rejected, will it hurt my credit score? Thanks and happy holidays.

Mary

Alain Diza asked:

This article tells you exactly what you need to do if you’re ever denied or rejected on any of your credit card applications both online and offline. It may be easier to deal with than you think…

No doubt, you’ve probably gotten literally hundreds of credit card applications in the mail and online, and each and every one of them has said that you’ve been “Pre-Approved”.

Of course it’s natural that this would lead us to believe that the application process is simply a formality. After all, you’ve been approved already so no worries, right? Wrong! Many of the offers that say you’re “pre-approved” don’t actually mean for the credit card. I know it’s misleading, but what they’re really saying is that you’ve been approved to apply for your card, not actually receive one. Your actual approval will depend on several different factors, any of which can keep you off the receiving end.

We’ll go over some of the reasons for rejection and what, if anything, can be done about them.

WHY YOU WERE REJECTED….

The most probable answer is your credit score. Although several other things may have been taken into consideration, such as your salary or time on your job, your credit score is usually the biggie. The catch here is that your credit history doesn’t even have to be bad, it can be blank and that will work against you just as much as a bad score will. Having no credit is almost as bad as having bad credit since the credit card companies have no reference point to see just how you will handle your credit account.

If you have a history of making late payments on bills and other loans, that will work against you. The credit card company wants to know that you are a worthwhile risk before they issue you a card.

As I mentioned above, other issues also come into play. If you have just started a new job, a creditor may want to wait a while to make sure that you keep it. These are other factors that will be considered if your credit history is less than perfect but not a total loss.

WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT….

Clean up your credit history ASAP! This is the single best step you can take in improving your options when it comes to credit cards and other types of loans as well.

Most creditors are required to tell you why you were rejected and what credit bureau they used to access your report. You should be entitled to a free copy of your credit report if the data contained on it was used to deny your application. Check with the credit bureau to see.

If your credit rating is poor, take action immediately. Start paying your bills on time. Look into consolidating your bills so that you can afford to pay the monthly amount. Eliminate any extra spending that isn’t necessary and use that “extra” towards your outstanding debts. Yes, this could take some time, but in the long run it will be well worth it.

Once you have cleaned up your credit a bit or established some basic credit, let some time pass. Apply for the card (or a better one) again. Once the creditor sees how hard you’ve been working to get your credit report up to par, you may just be rewarded for your efforts. Be careful, though. The last thing you want to do is go overboard with your new credit card and dig yourself into another financial hell-hole! So be wary

Dora
