What kind or what sort of credit card should/can I get?

I’m 18, a college student and have no credit history as far as I know. I have applied for several cards but was denied because I have no credit history. Also I recently began co-renting an apartment with a friend though and the credit application was approved probably because of his credit. Does this do something to my credit history that would somehow give me a credit history or score or something, and if so, is there some kind of timeframe when stuff starts to get reported to the credit reporting agencies? Thanks for the help.
