Credit Inquiry Question?

I got denied a credit card application because I have too many inquiries in the last 12 months and im close to my limit on my Macys card. I checked my credit report and I have 5 inquiries and the last one falls off in July 2010. I want to establish credit!!!

What should I do?
My plan is to pay off my card and not use it obviously. When can I apply for credit again in the midst of all of this?
